    There was another time other than 1976 where a party gaining more than 15 seats didnt lose seats in the next election, that was 1956.  Democrats had gained 19 seats and House control in 1954 by a 232-203 margin, but were actually able to add two seats to that in 1956 to bring themselves up to a 234-201 margin.  This was probably one of the best election periods around the country for Democrats other than the Democrats impressive three year set of gains in 1986, 1988, and 1990.
