    Think about it.  There is nothing to be gained from torturing someone who's been detained for months or years.  Whatever memories a person had have been long supplanted by the horrors of his near perdition.  So, really, the only benefit to be derived is to serve the torture up as an example of what could happen to any of us who don't behave.

    Since it's not practically possible to forcibly restrain many millions of people, the only way to control them is through intimidation--to make someone timid and not ready to act on his own behalf.
