Most of my neighbors are agnostic, athiest, or pagan.

Not sure what country these people are living in.

I say take all the religious extremists of every faith and put them on an island where they can fight to the death over who has the "one true God."

Leave the rest of us alone here in the modern world.

Don't get too carried away with the superiority of modernity. I think that the rise of religious extremists is a consequence of the "modern" West's shortcomings.

The modernizing process is often cited as justification for imperialism.

Don't fear them. Don't hate them. But respectfully disagree with their tactics.

At the core of every religion is searing and beautiful truth that has probably been warped when reified in society.

Many progressives I know take a disheartening stance towards religion. I belong to no church or temple but have yet to encounter a religious document that didn't make me feel a little more empowered and closer to the truth after reading it.

You seem to like the very existence or presence of religion, of whatever stripe.  And you think it all has value regardless of what the truth of the matter may be.  In short, you appear to think religion is therapeutic, or at least inspirational, even if it's a mass delusion.

I tend to think it's the opposite of therapeutic -- in fact, I think it's dangerous, particularly when it begins to infiltrate government.

believe in an invisible sky fairy moral traffic cop, but are, in general, functional in society nonetheless.

Oh to have pagan neighbors.  The parties would rock.
