    The purpose of triage is to determine who needs to go back right away vs. who is stable enough to sit and wait in the waiting room (and eventually be seen by a provider who may be a doctor or nurse practitioner). It's used to separate the stable patients from the unstable ones, so that the unstable patients are seen first. Many people are confused and assume that patients in the ER are seen on a 'first come, first serve' basis but that is not how it works.
