And 'Mapp and Lucia' is sitting right next to me, open to the Great Influenza Feint.  How mighty battles may be fought in tiny spaces...Lucia Forever!  (The series is actually known as 'Make Way for Lucia' and is presently only available used or on order. I'm waiting for the last two to come to me as my old copies fell apart.)

Did you ever read the Tom Holt continuations, from notes left by Benson?  Not great, but not terrible either.  I haven't seen the BBC adaption so if somebody could tell me if it's worth the time?

    •  Yes (5+ / 0-)

You're right.  Holt lacked the lively spontaneity I felt in Benson's writing, I think.

The BBC adaptation was very enjoyable, maybe not great because at times inconsistent in maintaining humor and character -- but I may be over-critical.

Performances by Geraldine McEwan as Lucia and especially Nigel Hawthorne as Georgie were exceptional.  Get the two of them near a piano and. . .!

Your opinion on the Holt work?

They burn our children in their wars and grow rich beyond the dreams of avarice.

      •  Holt was the Wrong Author (5+ / 0-)

I've read some of this other books and his humor, while very funny, isn't light enough for Lucia, etc.  Also I felt that he didn't have enough affection for the characters...to sum up, words but no music.

For used books, I go to www.abebooks.com...you can search a gazillion used book stores across the country.  Just remember that an author only receives royalties on that first sale so buy new books new pretty please.

        •  I agree, but I have to do all three (5+ / 0-)

buy new, buy used and borrow from the library.

My house is falling down from books, my hubby is more than a bit miffed...but I do still buy as I am able to do so for the reason you mention. :)

Sometimes I think I have kept the whole book world in business all by myself, but I tell people if I want authors to write the kind of stories I enjoy, I must help them to eat.
