and others, I've reread this post and a whole wellspring of emotions come forward for me.  I hestitate to write of "shame", which is really what should be part of any discussion about Guantanamo.  But I hesitate because of the way that shame itself has been turned into a tool of power as illustrated by Abu Graib.  The Kite Runner story and the whole lived experience of shame has led me to hesitate whenever the concept of shame is now introduced.  And that bothers me, because if there is an issue around which we, as US citizens should congregate about and discuss with regard to shame, it is Guantanamo.  I suppose what I'm trying to say is that another issue I know have with Bush/Cheney, the neocons and the entire fear mongering/terrorism industrial complex is their manipulation of and redefinition of shame for all of us.

They are dispicable creatures, all of them.  This is but one, very subtle example of how dispicable they are.
