  •  Goldwater was a Western Republican, which (0+ / 0-)

used to mean (still does?) favoring gender equality and a live-and-let-live approach to life.

He came around to gay rights faster than many Democrats, in the 80s.

Both Hillary and my mother were big Goldwater Republicans at one time in the 60s.  Both are feminists, and now both are Democrats (my mother is probably more liberal than Hillary).

    •  It's dying out, but there used to be real (0+ / 0-)

differences between Republicans from the South, North, and West. Now if they don't toe the Southern line they are likely to be primaried (there's still a few in the northeast, but they are clearly not the power brokers). All(both?) of the Republicans I know out here are amazed at the stuff that the party is involved in elsewhere. Is Government intrusion into the bedroom actually popular anywhere. I fear some of the policy proposals on the table (like mandates for health insurance) will be unpopular in the west). I can remember a columnist for an eastern paper commented that all americans should be in homes (I know it's not earth shattering stuff, but there was a bit of dissent that homeless people should not be forced inside). I've visited the east coast and they always seemed less willing to let you do stupid stuff back there. In the west (parts of CA excepted) freedom to do stupid things that might get you killed are almost as deeply regarded as firearms in the south.
