it's like the Dean scream in one way at least... what actually happened [the so-called scream] and what Obama said about Reagan were both more complicated than portrayed. but both had an easily grabbable media hook. and oh, how they love that.

yes, what Obama said about Reagan being transformational was nuanced. but nuance has a hard time making itself known when up against the kind of deep disgust Reagan provokes in so many of us. that's why this is having an impact.

but whether Obama and his Reagan comment gets the non-stop media push/frame as Dean and his 'scream' remains to be seen.

is perhaps not the best moment for nuance.

And anyway, "transformational" does carry a positive connotation, whether you like it or not.

with either of your points. personally, i'm not sure there is ever a good time to be nuanced in a campaign.

the word transformational certainly does carry a positive connotation. that's what bugged me so much about Obama using it. strictly speaking, i guess it's true. but the amount of damage Reagan did and what he was able to get away with makes me furious to this day. that's why seeing 'transformational' in the same sentence as 'Reagan' is so infuriating. because it is a positive word. at best, Obama's remarks were politically clumsy.

if what i meant wasn't clear in my first comment, i hope this one clears it up.

And I apologize for my snippy tone.

Reagan does make my blood boil....still!

i'm glad. and no need to apologize. in fact, after hitting post i wondered if maybe i was being too touchy about what you said. i just have such a visceral reaction to Reagan... even after all these years... that i couldn't stand that even one person might think i was saying something the least bit positive about him.
