That's marketing.  And it's relatively easy if you're working with people who already believe, say, that poor people are freeloaders, that blacks are born criminals, that Hispanics are taking our jobs away, that women with power are dangerous, that gays are a threat to families, that abortion is a way for loose sluts to avoid the consequences of their actions, that preserving the environment means destroying jobs, that rich people are heroic leaders, that America is the only good country on Earth and all the other countries (especially the French) are trying to destroy us.

The Democrats' problem isn't a lack of ideas.  It's that our marketing needs to stem from appealing to people's basic sense of decency -- and while a lot of people are basically decent, many of them also can be induced to do indecent things through the creation of strong emotions, especially fear.  Moreover, we have different types of reward strategies.  Republicans reward their constituencies by making them feel smugly superior.  Democrats, unfortunately, too often reward their constituencies by making them feel guilty.  We need sometimes to say "well done!" and make our voters feel good about supporting Democrats, and show them that their support has delivered something good -- not just telling them that they're still not good enough.
