at the 1993 sheep shearing championships in Masterton!

During an intermission there was a magician on stage. He asked for a volunteer from the audience to participate in a magic trick. Sir Edmund obliged. I don't remember the details, but Sir Edmund doffed his suede jacket, which was set on fire by the magician! But in the end Sir Edmund returned to his seat wearing said jacket, unharmed.

I don't remember much else from the championships, except the monotonously repeated 70 second mental loop of shearing sheep. It's truly remarkable how quickly they do it.

You don't have to be so formal: he always preferred "Sir Ed".

Once you get the hang of it, sheep shearing is probably very meditative....it also gives you soft hands (from the lanolin)
