  •  GOP voters are pretty much irrelevant (0+ / 0-)

We don't need to win a single Republican over to win the election.  There are enough independents/swing voters that both parties can more or less cancel one another out.

I'm uncertain about what will happen in November.  I agree with you that we should not count our chickens before they hatch, and there's a chance it will be another close election.  At the same time, there have been some very bad signs for Republicans lately.

    1. Money woes
    1. Registration/Party Identification tilting heavily towards the Democrats
    1. Lack of enthusiasm for their candidates
    1. Democrats more or less favored across the board on all the issues

I don't want to get overconfident or get my expectations too high, but all of those negatives could point toward a fairly substantial electoral win.  And, honestly, if it doesn't happen now after Bush totally screwing up, then it's never going to happen.  If we barely squeak out a win this time, then I'm afraid our President may be a one termer.

Don't like XOM and OPEC? What have YOU done to reduce your oil consumption? Hot air does NOT constitute a renewable resource!

A hobbling, half-blind, poorly served democracy, of course.  But the beast may gather itself together enough to throw the bums out -- and give the next administration/Congress enough of a shove to get something done.  I hope for an kind of New Deal moment, but we'll see what we can get . . . .

      The Republicans have a problem.

They had fangs...they were drinking blood....They had this look in their eyes, totally animal. I think they were young Republicans. (Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

    •  That's the problem (0+ / 0-)

Indies love "maverick" McCain.  And McCain does differ from the Republican Party line on enough issues that, to a certain extent, he's earned the line.

What we need to convince them is the awful truth: McCain will almost certainly attack Iran for no reason if he becomes president, which, in turn, will almost certainly start World War III.  If we don't, he wins, and World War III starts.
