    We've got plenty of wind here but no hills so firming the resource is a problem. I'm curious to see what sort of businesses evolve as we get used to power that isn't always available at the same level ... and as they evolve areas that aren't developable now will likely become so.

      I reckon most of the high plains have some hills between them and some of the major electricity export markets ... and of course, that is a natural place to be looking at siting ammonium production, because that'll be where there will be high volume lines connecting to trunk through lines.

         It isn't pancake flat here, but if you want 300' of rise you've got to drive quite a ways. We're on the bluffs of the West Fork of the Des Moines river ... can't be more than 50' down to the valley. I  hear they won't build pumped storage if its less than 200' of vertical.

          This is the context where I was discussing a trunk electric system in combination with an electrification of primary trunk freight rail lines ... while there may not be adequate drops in much of Iowa and the Dakotas, there would seem to be in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and if the trunk runs through those states, then direct links to the trunk to connect those drops to the trunk line that can provide a substantial buffer between those wind resources and the Greater Chicago metroplex.

          And then in reasonable proximity to that power buffer may be a compelling site for energy intensive operations such as aluminum smelting (or recycling) and ammonium production.

            Once I am sure we've got renewable ammonia moving here I'll move on to rail electrification. You know Alan Drake, right? We met over Christmas ... there are a lot of reasons to run a transmission corridor along a rail line ...
