two main reasons for the Obama surge from my pov

    1.  he who controls the media controls the spice, er, message.  Obama is the flavor of the month.  He talks about hope, people like hope.  So the media goes out of its way to continually dissect every word and step Hillary takes while only focusing on Obama's staged performances where he shines in all of his eloquent wonder.
    1.  Obama plays to the Deaniacs, younger voters who want to play a part in selecting a winner...they are ready and willing to part with cash to keep Obama funded.  They are ready and willing to replay HRC's negatives as handed to them by the media or Obama's talking pt emails while trumpeting "hope" and "yes we can" as signals that "the times they are a changin."

ah hell lets make it 3.  Obama made an effort to put his name in peoples minds in the smaller states.  Clinton's campaign staff fucked up thinking they wouldn't need any of the caucus states.  If all the primaries were close together it wouldn't matter but from S. Tues till now, even though the delegate counts haven't changed much, the mere fact of the victories gives Obama the appearance of having momentum.  I say appearance because no matter that Obama won in Alaska, Kansas, Utah...since those states never help us in a GE they really shouldn't carry much weight in a nomination...but they do when one candidate tries to win all the Red States and pick up enough delegates in Blue States to stay even, while one candidate plays to the base of the Blue States while ignoring the states they know they won't win in the GE.  I get the fifty state strategy and agree with it.  But in the GE, if obama wins, I guarantee he won't do any more campaigning in places like NE, ID, UT, KS, etc than he did for the primaries, one appearance and a few ad buys...Obama, if he didn't have the fund raising machine he has wouldn't have been able to do what he has done in the campaign so far as far as making an effort in all fifty states, and trying to probably hurt him in places like CA where more money and time might have squeaked him out a win.

Clinton plays to the working class because the working class did very well under her husbands presidency.  Edwards got the shaft of having to go up against the first viable female candidate and the first viable black candidate.  I'm going to love JE till the day he dies and I can only hope he parlays his care of the dispossessed into something like what Al Gore has done with bringing global warming to mainstream consciousness.

I hope Hillary or Obama make a decent president because JE would have been a good one.

But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have laid my dreams under your feet; tread softly, because you tread on my dreams. -- Yeats
