That race matters is not a suprise to me. But I'm really suprised at the gender element in this campaign.

Being an expat in Germany for several years, I've witnessed the election of Chancellor Angela Merkel up close.

Amazingly, while there never was a female Chancellor before her, gender was not an issue AT ALL.

Her campaign at no time mentioned her gender as an advantage or a disadvantage. The press wasn't on the issue. At no time did she tried to rally the feminist vote, and in fact I believe she won bigger among men then among females (females in this country also tend to vote left more often).

When she finally won the election, she really won it on substance, and suprisingly the press made a bigger deal out of the fact she was from Eastern Germany then that she was a woman.

The press and people in general weren't talking about what she would do for women, they where talking about the opportunities of healing the divide between west and east germany.

Hillary's campaign seems to be the exact opposite of Merkels campaign, and it wouldnt suprise me if that is the major reason as to why she seems to be so unpopular among Democratic men. I wonder if she had run a campaign like Merkel she could have perhaps closed the deal on feb 5 or before.
