It is important to remember that not all Miami Cubans care about Cuba or Fidel. Generally those who came after 1980, or who are children of immigrants, have no interest in going back. Ever. To them it is a sh*thole they want nothing to do with. It is the former elites who pine for the old days.

    •  And it's the former elite who make the big (6+ / 0-)

campaign contributions.   It works out better for Repubs with the status quo, because it keeps the money train rolling.

But there is a growing coalition of farm-state repubs and dems who are trying to end the embargo so they can sell wheat and corn to he island.

being heard.  I don't think the old elites will ever accept that they can't turn back the clock.

It's very sad in a way. The Cuba they knew is not only long gone, but it also can never be recreated.

my father was born in San Miguel de los Banos, he describes it as a suburb of Havana? He came here before Castro because he liked it here. No political reasons.

He would tell me that the old elites as you put it let Cuba fall into the hands of Castro.

He did not like a certain element of the exile community who began a vociferous obsession with Castro when they did not take up arms against him.

The ones who had a right to speak had earned it, they were in jail or had been freed and chose to live a better life here and never looked back. And the ones who were silenced by execution had his respect. Certain ones have now earned the apparantly deserved moniker "Miami mafia.

He was also a lifelong Democrat.

My mother was from Cascajal in Santiago de Cuba.

got a contract to sell chickens and I believe telephone poles (not sure what else).

Alabama businesses sign over $25 million in Cuba Expo

The food exposition held in Havana included participants from over 100 countries.  Alabama companies signed contracts for over $25 million in products to be exported to Cuba.  The International Trade office works continuously to improve exports from Alabama around the globe.   Last year, Alabama saw an economicsaw an economic impact from trade with Cuba of over 300 million dollars.

I moved from Alabama last September, I got monthly ag updates when I lived there, that's how I knew about the contracts and Commissioner Sparks visits - in case anyone cared...
