that Hillary never really hit her stride in this campaign, in terms of coming up with a compelling message on why we should vote for her. Very early on, her campaign's focus became why not to vote for Barack, rather than rather than convincing us why we should vote for her. I think there's an issue of identity in this campaign, and that Hillary never really established a strong identity apart from Bill.

mama hearts obama, this comment really speaks to me.

I always got the impression that Hillary Clinton was presenting an image of herself during the campaign. This reminded me of what happens with women who become TV news anchors--the image consultants are called in and the persona is crafted and presented to the viewers. I seldom felt that I was seeing the authentic person.

The one person in my extended family who actually knew Hillary Clinton fairly well in the 90s, and who worked from time to time with both her and Bill, described her as a very nice, sincere, warm person. Watching her campaign from afar, by way of TV screens, I don't think I saw much of that person.

a bind when she decided to lean so heavily on Bill in this campaign. With him having a strong presence in the campaign, it's only natural to think about Hillary within the context of her relationship to him, rather than getting us to focus on what she's accomplished on her own. And speaking of her accomplishments, I think she might have given too much credence to those early polls her campaign was doing that showed her so far ahead. I think Hillary has taken for granted that we all know her, but again, I think what most people know about her has to do with her White House years, and she needed to do more to define herself apart from that, and apart from Bill.
