  •  I have a friend who was a Cuban escapee (8+ / 0-)

    when she was in her prepubescent years.  Her father was a businessman, her mother a housewife and mother; they left in the middle of the night in the mid-60s when Castro set up his neighborhood watch program.  Basically, everyone spied on everyone on behalf of Castro, and there was nothing one could do to defend one's family or self against a spiteful neighbor.  

    The whole family sneaked off to Florida in an open boat, and my friend said it was terrifying.  They've done well here in the U.S., but they all miss the rich culture, the singing, the spirit of the people, and their traditions.
