For some people, there may be no value. For people who focus on the negatives, there could be value in highlighting the positives. Look at the title of the diary. If, hypothetically, you were talking to someone who was suicidal, you wouldn't give them a "balanced" view of life - "Hey, your future will probably have some highlights, but I won't lie to you, it'll have a lot of pain, too, but come down off that ledge anyway.", would you? (Or would you? I'm no expert in that topic.) Hyperbole, of course, but different folks are motivated (and demoralized) by different things. If this doesn't work for you, move on.

The facts can be laid out objectively without doing that.

The first thing I look at when I'm concerned about how the trends
      might be going is

      http://synapse.princeton.edu/~sam/pollcalc.html

While this is still shows Kerry to be a strong favorite, it has
dropped precipitously since the previous weeks, causing Sam to write

" The first effects of recent events - the EV count and probability have declined. This could be a rough ride!"

It's not a reason to panic, but it is a reason for legitimate concern.
