That can happen after you have been knocked senseless a few hundred times by big linebackers.

Mind you, I'm in a state (Illinois) where the Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court was a football player, of sorts.  Chief Justice Robert Thomas would have never been elected to the court in the first place if it wasn't for his former job as the placekicker for "Da Bears."

Then there is Associate Justice Alan Page of the Minnesota Supreme Court.  I'm not sure if Justice Page has to spend a lot of time writing dissenting opinions on the bench.  Of course, if you were the other Justices on the Minnesota Supreme Court, would you want to be the one to tell the only defensive lineman ever named NFL MVP he had the wrong opinion on a case?  I didn't think so either.

That's a state that takes its football seriously.

Thomas first got elected as an Appellate Court Judge, winning his Republican Primary contest (in a district tahat takes in most of northern Illinois, but not Chicago of Cook County) fairly easily, due to name recognition.  Then he won a hotly-contested three-way race for the Republican nomination to his supreme Court seat, easily defeating the appointee to the vacancy and a woman judge with a lot of money to spend on the campaign.  But the political assests of his opponents could not overcome Thomas having Coach Mike Ditka campaign on his behalf.
