    is that any government agency created to oversee food safety still is going to take orders from the White House.

    Not a problem with a sane President, or one with a Congress who is willing to hold a President accountable.

    But if we don't elect competent and honest officials to government, there is no possible way to structure government to get around that problem.

    A Congress whose 'ultimate weapon' in forcing accountability from the executive is a "sternly worded letter" fails the competency test.

      in the structure of our Constitutional system are suckers in the true sense of the word.

      Structures require maintenance. A political structure requires maintenance of citizen understanding of what corruption and intentional undermining can do and vigilance to make sure at least enough controls are always in place to balance those seeking to destroy or misuse the structure.
