Apparently, there are quite a lot of them and a number have communicable diseases.

Approximately fifty percent of the bison in Yellowstone National Park have the disease called brucellosis, which threatens Montana's livestock industry and human health.

Admittedly, this is after a short google.  I read the diary and thought: The why is missing, also some idea of the total population and whether it is increasing or decreasing.  Here's the rest of that item:

Moreover, there are no documented cases of cattle contracting the disease, brucellosis, from Yellowstone buffalo, and all cattle in the vicinity have been vaccinated against the disease, which causes buffalo and cattle to spontaneously abort their young.

I should have included this for clarification, I just honestly couldn't think straight enough at the time. I didn't want to also think about the real reason they slaughter the buffalo...

Since there's a solution and "Moreover, there are no documented cases of cattle contracting the disease, brucellosis, from Yellowstone buffalo, and all cattle in the vicinity have been vaccinated against the disease, which causes buffalo and cattle to spontaneously abort their young (link in that comment),"

that leaves the general motivation of Manifest Destiny with all it's "progress," or "spreading democracy" as it's called today. There are so many historical implications, that's why I posted the video at the end to help add some clarification, historically speaking.

The question that I ask, is why is the solution to slaughter and not relocate the buffalo when "Moreover, there are no documented cases of cattle contracting the disease, brucellosis, from Yellowstone buffalo, and all cattle in the vicinity have been vaccinated against the disease, which causes buffalo and cattle to spontaneously abort their young?"

I think "what do they want to build?" for example.
