  •  Do more housework, get more sex (1+ / 0-)

    This story caught my eye.

The average dad has gradually been getting better about picking himself up off the sofa and pitching in, according to a new report in which a psychologist suggests the payoff for doing more chores could be more sex.

I think this speaks to a greater issue in the news these days, which is tremendous confusion in statistics and recognizing causal relationships where they exist and where they don't exist.  Let's take a case we all know and love - the surge vs. the reduction in violence in Iraq and U.S. casualties.  One preceded the other but there is little evidence of a causal relationship.

The other possible interpretation is merely a tendency towards spinning studies to be as salacious as possible as this tends to lead to more interesting headlines.

In the particular example of the housework and the sex, what is missing is the underlying causal component behind each one - namely that a husband who is more emotionally connected with his wife understands how meeting her needs around the house with getting things done is also more likely to be more emotionally connected with her on issues such as child-rearing, financial responsibility, and spirituality - which all taken together are likely to indicate a level of intimacy which would lead to - well - more sex.

    Correlation is not causality.

    Correlation is not causality.

Formal logic should be mandatory in high school english.
