    Mega- (symbol M) is an SI prefix in the SI system of units denoting a factor of 106, 1,000,000 (one million).

    For example, 1 MW (megawatt) = 1,000,000 watts = 1,000 kilowatts.

    actually went to look this up further - Mega as a way to convey bigness started when Megaton bombs started being talked about...
    turns out although it now is meant to convey a million units (megawatt for example), the root in Greek means "great" or "large", so the use here is more accurate than I initially thought.
