  •  I have calmed down about this (13+ / 0-)

I was really terrified over this story when it first broke out last night. But I don't think it's quite what I first thought. Check out this article over at TPM.

I think this is an opportunity for him. He will probably give a speech, address his faith, his desire to stay out of identity politics, and of course, his rejection and denouncing of those comments. So maybe he can change the tone of the race.

Also, it's not like the Obama campaign is not doing anything. They had Shaun Casey on Good Morning America when they show that clip, contextualizing. They are aware of the problem and I think Obama will respond forcefully.

Pennsylvania=Iowa. It won't even be close!

for 20 years?  Did he not know about this man's anti-American views?

You seem to get the potential damage from this.  I appreciate that you have confidence he can deal with it - but I don't really see how.  He is inextricably tied to Wright at this point.

It is NOT an anti-American church. Rev Wright has his own views but it's not like this is what he's preaching about every sunday. It's literally cherry-picking. Trinity is a completely mainstream church, and the anti-American comments are not some sort of church ethos. He isn't even the pastor there anymore.

I would refer you to this video of Jane Fissler-Hoffman talking about why she's a member.

You can't judge the totality of Jeremiah Wright based on these edited sermons. We all have family members like this - people we love and cherish and respect in so many ways. But they're complete bigots on political or racial or cultural matters and they embarrass you in public. My father-in-law is that way. Does that mean I reject them any association with them? No. Does it mean we publicly distance ourselves from their disgusting remarks? Yes. Obama has done this, and Obama will do it again.
