true, overall cost is driven up.  every hospital can recover a certain amount from state and federal resources (so our tax dollars already pay for them), and it drives up costs so they can cover what our tax dollars did not (increasing insurance cost), furthermore, if you want to self pay, check out the cost(especially inpatient).  It is reflective of 1) an attempt to recover cash lost due to low reimbursement by insurance and the uninsured, and 2) setting higher prices as an attempt to drive up reimbursement by insurance co's (who never pay the actual price tag amount).

Simple way to see it, part of our health care costs include marketing, ad, PR, manhattan real estate dollar for the insurance industry.  Furthermore, the corruption of our federal gov't by pharma is driving up costs in a major way, Medicare D was a coup in that the main concession by the federal gov is that prices of meds cannot haggled by medicare. the price that medicaid pays had served as a standard for the market at large, and with medicare paying what the pharm companies demand (no matter the cost), it helps keep prices high.  This is one of the most egregious examples of just creating a pipe from our tax dollar coffers directly into a major industry, true corporate welfare. That is the magic of GWB, he found that big gov't can work very well or industry as a reverse robin hood.
