  •  Certainly some people set out to game the system, (0+ / 0-)

but that is not the only reason and perhaps not even the most common reason for cross-party primary voting.  I have voted in both Republican and Democratic primaries in the past (usually state and local), but I also tend to register as an Independent, Undeclared or even Green Party member between primaries.  I have never voted for a candidate I didn't like more than most of the others running.  I'm a big believer in being careful what you ask for (because you just might get it), so I would never risk voting for the "bad" candidate.  I do, however, believe it's my right as a voter to use whatever tools are legally given to me to ensure that the cream rises to the top in the general.

If the Democratic party already has a clear winner and it's a good choice in my opinion (or if they have no one running at all), then I turn my attention to the other party, and ask myself "who would I prefer from this group?"  Ideally, I would prefer we do away with primaries completely and use instant run-off voting (in which each voter ranks the candidates by order of preference and the computer tallies the run-off match-ups automatically).  In the absence of this more representational system, I ignore party lines whenever possible and vote for the best people wherever I find them.

I agree that disingenuous gaming of the primary system is stupid and risky, but that's not what everyone who cross-party votes is up to.
