  •  It is a great speech. Unfortunately I suspect (4+ / 0-)

the headline in every newspaper, the 15 second soundbite and thus the entirety of what 150 million people glean from the speech will be:

    "Obama says Wright 'like family.'"

    That's it. End of coverage.

I'm exceedingdly depressed that he has to even subject himself to this. I feel like he's being forced by institutionalized racism to jump through a hoop like some trained animal, with the likes of Pat Buchanan holding the hoop.

    Who was Bush_Horror2004, anyway?

he did not throw Wright under the bus. He's still standing on principle, and, IMHO, truth.

He's doing what he has to do, but he's not selling his soul.

Under the circumstances, he's showing high moral and political integrity.

than I ever have. Not because I think what Wright said is worthy of support, but because Barak, in refusing to shun Wright, acknowledges that people, American people are imperfect, complex and 3-dimensional. You can love some aspects of a person and reject others. It's possible, even though it's not politically expedient.

Barak has staked his candidacy on the american people acknowledging the truth about race and all of it's messy, contradictory and often inflammatory manifestations. If we as a country are really ready to get beyond race, we have to have this discussion. Bravo Obama.

I fear it's going to be cut like this:

"Tonight on NBC Nightly News, Barack Obama addresses the Wright Controversy"  (Clip of Wright saying something) (Clip of Obama: "I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community.") As his speech seeks to address the controversy that embroils his campaign.. The Wall Street Bailout Continues; and NBC News evaluates the legality of your NCAA Office Pool: how much can you bet without getting caught?  And Much More tonight with Brian Williams..."

Sad, but I can already see this kind of soundbyte cuts occurring.
