  •  This is a big deal (13+ / 0-)

I've seen some of the crap FIRE pulls.  I keep waiting for them to target my classes because I refuse to allow my students to present creationism as science.

I don't teach at Dartmouth, but I do presentations there from time to time and they're the sort of things that these groups hate.  (I help the staff and medical personnel better understand how to deal with transsexual students and patients).

Groups like FIRE want to stop this sort of thing, and doing so doesn't just push an agenda.  It endangers the lives of the vulnerable.

    •  Correction: FIRE Doesn't Do That (0+ / 0-)

FIREis a good, libertarian group. They don't target teachers, and certainly not for creationism. Now, I disagree with them on occasion (for not speaking out against David Horowitz, for ignoring conservative religious colleges, and for taking a few questionable stands), but overall they do a very good job defending both liberals and conservatives against repressive administrators. We shouldn't lump them in with the real enemies of academic freedom.
