  •  So in academia we should call it (0+ / 0-)
    - spirejacking?
    - towerjacking?
    - campusjacking?

    •  We should call it social psychology (4+ / 0-)

The idea that Liberals are weak because they listen to other peoples ideas and try to be fair and balanced doesn't come from their bringing blacks and women into the dialog in the fifties, it comes from their bringing think tanks and the federalist society into an unholy union with academia.

Although liberal Platonism with the statesmans republic populated by philosopher kings, guardians and the like is not exactly a new concept, Leo Strauss's best and brightest dialectic that spread from the University of Chicago in the forties added an ironic twist to the torch race on horseback.

Mentoring the best and brightest to be good statesmen and guardians as a way to make a better world, with an emphasis on law and order through education, healthcare, social security, and all the other consequences of a carefully structured economy and a new world order sounded like one of the better consequences of America coming out on top after WWII.

Law schools and judges, bankers and scientists all bought into the american dream and worked hard to pass it on to their children by getting them into the best schools.

Unfortunately the rest of the world wanted some of the good life for itself. Naturally the guardians who had made the world safe for Democracy thought their military industrial complex should come first. Eisenhower built a national defense highway system so we could see the USA in our chevrolet.

Then the cold war hit. After all the James Bond stuff, Korea, Cuba, the Congo, Vietnam, El Salvador, BCCI, and Iran Contra, The benign neglect of the War on Poverty, The war on Drugs, all the little covert actions, assassinations, Gorbechov took it upon himself to deprive us of an enemy.

The combination of Madison Avenue, the cold war, and the emerging main stream media, all the things that had made made patriotism important were suddenly threatened by the spector of world peace.

The framing that gave us a national security agency, national security, emergency powers, just kept on trucking in Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, MIT, Stanford and the rest of the Ivy Leauge.
