from the Minnesota Legislative Reference Library:

The debate related to the issue of same-sex marriage has become prominent in Minnesota and throughout the United States in recent years. This is not the first time that Minnesota has addressed this issue. The Minnesota Supreme Court was one of the first in the nation to rule on the issue of same-sex marriage. The Baker v. Nelson decision (191 N.W.2d 185) in 1971 held that Minnesota Statutes prohibited marriages between same-sex partners.
