  •  Falwell not there though (3+ / 0-)

To create the illusion that the world's religious leaders were uniting behind Moon, they assembled some really sad people.

The white guy is a Pentecostal pastor, Jesse Lee Peterson, much of whose congregation left him over his support for Moon. One notable is Haitham Bundakji, a Muslim leader from Orange County whose claim to fame is trying (unsuccessfully) to calm the rage of Adam Gadahn, the "American Al Qaeda," and getting punched in the face.

They even got a Detroit rabbi to show up and blow a shofar. But a number of signs suggest he's not a real rabbi. One witness told me he screwed up his prayers, and no one could find evidence that his congregation was for real.

It is also reassuring to know that he only got controversial or fake religious reps, but the eye-candy is effective.

      •  The Falwell connection... (3+ / 0-)

Yeah, the eye candy of the coronation does not exactly match what was going on behind the scenes.

Falwell took $3.5 million from Moon for his university. This was around the time he'd gone into debt spending, among other things, on the Clinton Chronicles that alleged a long trail of dead bodies behind Bill.

        •  I had completely forgotten about... (0+ / 0-)

that wicked episode of Falwell's escapades. So Moon may have knowingly funded that effort?  If that is the case, Clintonites should get on this story, shouldn't they?

          •  It's a good question (1+ / 0-)

Check out Bob Parry's piece on this at Consortium News: Jerry Falwell's Deal With The Devil.

            •  Fascinating! Clinton should get on this! (0+ / 0-)
            •  Also, the article has some nice Moon quotes... (2+ / 0-)

              Such as:

On May 1, 1997, for instance, Moon told a group of followers that "the country that represents Satan's harvest is America."

In one speech to his followers, Moon boasted that "without knowing it, even President Reagan is being guided by Father [Moon]."

"History will make the position of Reverend Moon clear, and his enemies, the American population and government will bow down to him," Moon said, speaking of himself in the third person. "That is Father's tactic, the natural subjugation of the American government and population."

Seems to me this story is a great antidote to the patriotism weapon the Right loves to use against the Left.
