Mandela could EASILY have gone the Mugabe route.  In fact, given how he was treated over so many years, the vast majority of humans probably WOULD have done so.  A number of years ago, while the apartheid forces still controlled South Africa, our church hosted a presentation by an American employee of the Department of Agriculture who had spent two periods of time in South Africa during the early and late years of apartheid.

He was in despair, because he thought during his early years there, that it was possible that South Africa could have a peaceful transition to majority rule, but by his second time living there, he thought a peaceful transition would be virtually impossible, and that the whites had blown the chance for a peaceful transition by resisting so long.  He was obviously wrong.

A couple of years ago, I mentioned this story to a white American who was born and raised in South Africa, but who immigrated here while apartheid was still going on.  He isn't all that political, but thought apartheid was a hideous system, and said that one of the big reasons he left as a young adult was that he had reached the conclusion that a peaceful change of the system was nearly impossible, and he didn't want to be raising a family there when things blew up.  He is clearly convinced that Nelson Mandela certainly belongs in the top 5 historic figures of the 20th Century, and may be the greatest figure of the 20th Century -- not in terms of his impact on the world as a whole, but in terms of his personal greatness.  And I think he's probably absolutely correct.
