love their country more than they love being right.  Constantly being slapped by reality should wake anyone up.  Curious that it does not, for some.

however i'm not sure how much reality plays into the factor.

I tend to believe it's a control thing.  A "See i told you so, now go do blah, beause i'm right.  And don't ask questions."

They'll purposely go the opposite direction and away from reality.

Look at the way they just deny Global Warming.  Al Gore brings the issue to our attention and despite the reality, they'll sink in and deny just so they don't have to admit that Al Gore is right and not them.  Abstinance only education is another example.

My brother's wife is hard-line Republican.  When faced with undeniable proof that something she believes is mistaken, she cuts off any further discussion.  I did get her to tell me that in her opinion, "it's best if we all have a strong leader" to tell us what to do and what to think.
She says she knows she's not aware of all the facts, and she doesn't want to be.  "If we have to think about everything and figure out what we should do, then why even have a President"?
This thinking is so foreign to me, so hard to grasp, that I can't even discuss it with her.  To be fair, she finds me just as difficult to understand.

        •  I have no way to prove this, but i'm wondering (3+ / 0-)

if this has to do with being told how to live your life.  The way of the church and to not question the motives of the church but to just follow along.  We know what's right.

BTW while i'm an agnostic, i'm not bashing the church here.  Just want to point that out.

You may have something there.  Maybe it's just being accustomed to the idea that you should "respect your betters".
She does see things in black and white terms..so maybe it has less to do with religious training than it does with your basic world view.

          •  I've always believed this about some religions. (3+ / 0-)

My family are all born-again christians. When the church tells you exactly how to live your life, there is no need for self-examination or to think for yourself. I just treat them as if they're all brainwashed.
