The D lock on the Senate seats has been because we've had better candidates.  Period.  Even in the years when we ran iffy guys (Torricelli 96/02, Menendez 06), the Rs responded by running even iffier ones (Zimmer, Forrester, Baby Kean).  The closest the GOP ever came to taking a Senate seat was 1990 when the voters rebelled against Jim Florio by voting for Bill Bradley's opponent, an obscure county freeholder named Christie Whitman.

The hold on Drumthwacket isn't a hold at all - since 1974, there have been 2 terms of Byrne (D), 2xKean (R), Florio (D), 2xWhitman (R), McGreevey (D), Corzine (D).      The last two gubernatorial elections also featured crappier-than-average Republicans (Schundler and Forrester).

This race is going to be one of those ones called at 8:01pm on Election Day.
