On the other hand, I was ten years old when Dr. King was assassinated.  I grew up in Canton, Ohio, and I had never even heard of Martin Luther King.  I first heard his name from the news bulletin that interrupted that Thursday's episode of Batman.  (Batman & Robin had just leapt into the Batboat, and were racing away across the waves.)

So I asked my mother who he was.  And she told me.  I don't remember exactly what she said, but it was clear enough for me to immediately grasp the ugliness that lay behind his murder.  It was clear enough that I cried.  Maybe I wasn't up on current events, but somewhere along the way I'd picked up on right and wrong.

Sometimes I still feel like crying.  Maybe I'm projecting, but if a ten-year-old can figure it out that quickly, a thirty-two-year-old congressman has no excuse for not getting it.
