  •  Legal Purchases of Raw Milk (7+ / 0-)

State laws vary on purchasing raw milk. Some totally ban it, some allow sales in small quantities. I purchase milk from a small goat dairy that was compliant with USDA/state regulations. Everything was clean, she tested her milk, & kept the necessary records.

The milk that I purchase has a very clean taste and makes wonderful cheese. Many farm children grow up drinking raw milk.

I would like to see the USDA and the states get back to supporting the small producers instead of fighting against them. Emphasize regulations that are for safety, but don't make the process so complex that producers cannot afford to comply. I also don't like a recent trend of using license renewal as leverage to force dairy owners into other USDA/state programs.

    •  Good news from Vermont. (7+ / 0-)

This week the VT state Senate voted to double the amount of raw milk that farms can sell on a daily basis from 25 quarts to 50 quarts. It's part of a gradual movement toward "unlimited raw milk sales".

In addition, "The Agency of Agriculture also has agreed to lift a longstanding ban on advertising raw milk sales. By allowing farmers to market their unpasteurized milk, Shollenberger said, the dairy industry will cultivate a niche market for an increasingly popular "farm-fresh" product."

I grew up across the road from a diary farm in western PA in the 1960's. The farmer used our 30 acres to grow corn and hay for his cows. He paid us "rent" every night in the form of a large brown jar filled to the brim with fresh, raw milk (with about 2 inches of cream on top).

I don't know what it really is, but the stuff that passes for milk in the grocery stores these days sure ain't the real thing.
