    My theory is that it seems from an inability to disagree, we've so demonized the idea of differing opinions that people can't merely disagree with others, they have to turn those they disagree with into monsters and elevate their own positions/beliefs/interests into a postiion of smug self-righteousness.

    Disagreement, rather than being useful, becomes a form of disloyalty and lack of 'unity'. I see this attitude echoed here too and consistently by a few posters.

    Discussions become very macho and thus very stupid. Indeed, they can hardly be dignifed by the description 'discussion'.
