  •  The whole military has become more fundy (9+ / 0-)

About twenty years ago fundamentalist Christians decided they needed to push for greater "representation" in the military. Since then, fundamentalist and evangelizing chaplains have been steadily replacing the good chaplains that the military used to have. The chaplaincy is less about supporting soldiers in bad situations no matter what, and more about pushing your own particular brand of your own particular religion on the masses.

Regarding meetings, at our pagan "study group" we talked about how we got to where we're at in life, and what's going on in our life. We provided support for each other in an environment where we were treated as evil immoral devil-worshippers. It's not a religious need, it's a human need, and it is a tragedy that organized religion has subverted the concept of fellowship between people to such an extent.

    •  I would argue that they are not Xtian (1+ / 0-)

because they have no sense of what Christ actually taught.  (I say this as an agnostic with Buddhist tendencies.)  All the major religions have pretty much the same message: love, peace, understanding, tolerance.

Anybody who claims to be Xtian but tries to ram it down another person's throat is not merely wrong, but an anti-christian.  IMHO.

doesn't change the banner they march to war under. The fundy chaplains may not be true Christians (and I have engaged in a lot of debate over what would actually define a true Christian), but they've got crosses on their uniforms.

        •  Sorry: didn't mean to imply otherwise... (2+ / 0-)

they will be convinced that theirs is the One True Right And Only Way until they die...

And they will never understand that the Framers of the Constitution were primarily Deists--which the yokels you served under would consider (not necessarily incorrectly) atheists.

To put this in perspective:  during the Enlightenment, from which our constitution arises, wars of religion were considered...well...stupid and old-country.  Unfortunately, since the Enlightenment, the U.S. populace seems to be determined not to be.  If ya know what I mean.
