Hawaii actually is an 'at will' state as well - but it protects more categories than federal law does, including (IIRC) 'creed' (which might include political persuasion) and sexual orientation... but even in HI, if you don't have a contract that says otherwise, you can be fired just because your boss doesn't like the expression on your face.

[i'm no longer a manager :)], I've fired dozens of people and it was made clear to me that I could fire 'for cause' or for 'no cause', but what I COULDN'T do was fire 'for cause' that was BULLSHIT, so a smart manager always makes up a reason that sounds legitimate -- to me this one set off alarm bells, I sincerely doubt that this is a legal termination, since a reason was stated, and the reason was illegal (violation of 1st, 14th amendments).  He'd have been better off just to fire her without saying anything -- perhaps some of his clients should be made aware of his stallinist purge, they can't ALL be repugs.

so never cared what job rules are here.  Oh well.  Better keep my mouth shut if I ever go back to work.

In truth, they can always find a way to get rid of you if they want.  I was always in "management" so never had any real protection regardless except in CA, the real management ran scared of the courts.
