  •  deaths (none)
    One more thought on deaths.

There are fewer deaths in Iraq now than if we'd left Saddam in power.  However, I wouldn't say we bear moral responsibility even for all the 10-20 thousand.  For example, the civilians killed in the war because the Fedayeen marched them in front of their troops as human shields.  I'd have to credit those bodies on Saddam's side of the ledger.

Also, the civilian Iraqis killed by Iranian-sponsored terrorist bombings I'd would have to credit to Islamists, not us.

Same with the guys in Al-Sadr's militia.  These guys don't seem to have heard there's democracy in Iraq now.  If they have a point of view (and their point of view is: institute Sharia law or else), they can campaign for office just like Mr. Al-Sistani and the many other reasonable folks in Iraq.  But no, they want to start up a militia and take over by force.  I'd say these guys brought their own deaths upon themselves.

So when you give out those numbers of deaths, make sure you say who's really responsible.

    •  If you are speaking in accounting terms.... (none)
While trying to account for who has the most blood on their hands, you overlook the more important detail: who is being held accountable for the death and destruction?  If you don't see that the US is, you are deluding yourself to the situation in the real world.

The administration that you support has completely lost every opportunity to win "the hearts and minds of Iraq" as we are ultimately held responsible for the bloodshed.  Just like in the financial market, you can make a case for what your book value is, but the market ultimately decides what your price is.

Right now, the market is seeing a bad venture led by poor management and is pricing us accordingly.
