he was doing what people who cold call for sales or politics figure out. More people stay on the line when you tell him its a survey. I work in Market Research now and those type of calls do not make it any easier to gather data.

I've fallen for it a grand total of once in my entire life. Whenever someone calls and tells me it's a survey I ask "Is it really a survey or are you going to try to sell me something?" Some tried lying to keep me on the line and I didn't even bother engaging them at that point, I simply hung up.

These days with caller ID, I don't bother answering the phone unless it's someone I know. If it's important they can leave a voice mail and I'll call back if I think it's worthwhile.

I still have my old NYC phone number (thanks to VOIP service) and I get tons of robo calls on that line during election season.

I hate political robo-calls and think they should be illegal.  Any good they do is canceled out by the mischief possible by no-good-niks.  Or at the very least we should be able to opt out in the same way we can opt out of other solicitation calls.

        •  Yup, they're annoying (0+ / 0-)

Like I really believe [insert name of celebrity here] is going to call me personally and leave a message for me.

Oddly enough they only come in on that line.
