The Vietnam era vets suicide stats took on a life of their own. The supposedly solid number was that about 5,000 out of 500,000 who were in theater might have died by their own hand in roughly the five years after returning home. This turned into a tall tale that grew and grew until someone who'd been there started adding up the numbers and called bullshit on it. Sorry, no links, it was a good long while ago that I'd read this ...

The mental health care is in as big a mess as anything else the Bush administration screwed up, but there is no need to go running about quoting unverified fairytale stuff to whip up a furor. Just get them home, get funding for the V.A., and accept the fact that some percentage of folks are never going to come down from the experience until their bodies are cut down from a rafter in their own garage.
