    you guys are good.  i have only one correction.  #27 is outer, not route.
    as for hubert humphrey clue, the answer is fifth h.  the selfish's conclusion is the letter H, and that H is the fifth H in the sentence.  i think it is done, yes?

      Yeah, outer is way better than route. And fifth h, I never would have gotten that in a million years. I was hellbent on somehow turning poor Hubert into an alcoholic :)

      Those answers all look to be correct.

      And your explanation of why the answer to # 16 is Fifth H is also correct.)

      One closing note, regarding my non-lie (or my "truthfulness", in the spirit of "truth" as told by the Swiftboat vets).  If you read my introduction, I said simply that the clues were "arranged neatly in groups of 3, for your convenience"; nothing was mentioned about that being the number of words in a row.

      I hinted about looking at my previous two puzzles, and even included links back to both of them, because I thought looking at how I presented the clues in those would reveal what I was doing.

      In my first puzzle, I did the same thing I did this time: arranged the clues in groups of 3, even though the rows were not comprised of 3 answers.  But in my second puzzle, where there actually were 3 answers per row, I  not only grouped the clues in threes but labeled them (1-a, 1-b, 1-c; 2-a, 2-b, 2-c; etc.)  Thus my reversion to the first format for this puzzle was, I thought, a strong hint that there were not 3 words per row.

        stix and the others did all the heavy lifting.  they did a good job, as did you.  it was a frustrating but fun puzzle.
        now to the wordplay.  when i looked at #4, 'friends don't let friends drive drunk' popped into my head. i  don't think i am correct, but am i at all close?

          That's it exactly!

          (the letter set) FRI ends (a string of letters beginning with) D on T
          => "Friends don't"

          LET => "let" (That one was a gimme.)

          And finally: (the letter set) FRI  ends (a set of letters which would spell out) DRIVE (if the letters weren't staggering around and behaving as if they were) DRUNK
          => "friends drive drunk"

            i got the first part, and now i realize why i was confoozled.  when i copied it down, i left out the small "r", so i could figure out how i got friends don't, but the rest didn't make sense.  the drive part would have to be drunk, but without the little r, it wasn't working.  stoopit me, i should have checked the original again.

    •  congratulations, nonnie (3+ / 0-)

      I did come up with "fifth h" last night, but was in bed, and waited til morning).

      Nova--you have set a record, five days.  Of course, once stix figured out the pattern, it became pretty easy...thanks.

        i know what you mean.  once stix cracked the code, i got most of the answers, and i was very excited.  then i scrolled down to find that someone else had gotten them, too.  it's still fun.  i like that it's a group effort.
        thanks a lot, nova, for feeding out puzzle jones.
