Why do Republicans oppose Webb's GI bill?

I know they're stupid, evil, infinitely corrupt and all that, but what is to be gained from opposing it?  Is it just the money?

It turns out that Bush IS a uniter... he united the good half of the country virulently against him.

from doing something popular in an election year. That's enough motivation, no matter who gets screwed in the process.

It is partly about money...every dollar spent helping vets and soldiers is less in tax cuts the GOP can bestow on their contributor class.

It is also about is hard to demonize the Democrats as anti-troops when the Democrats are the driving force behind the most pro-troop piece of legislation in recent memory. Bush and the GOPers can't give Webb (and, by extension, the Democrats) the win.
