    As someone who cast his first Senatorial vote for Javits (in 1974), I recognized even then that this was an extraordinary Republican.  I was a college Freshman at the time, and was working part-time in the Democratic county HQ, but I still felt it important to vote for "good" Republicans like Javits.  

    Unfortunately, nowadays, all most people in New York know about "Javits" is that it is a Convention Center on the West Side of Manhattan.  Jacob Javits was an extraordinary politician and statesman.
