Towards the end of his life Martin LK Jr. saw that poverty was the real issue, shared by whites and non whites alike.  He saw racism as rooted in the larger issue of poverty.  And racism was a displacement of the anger over poverty and the powerlessness to change it.  Racism was a way to keep us diverted and divided. RFK's travels through the impoverished parts of our country was and education for him and changed some of his views.  Between his own life experience and his Chicago organizing days, Obama doesn't need to be educated on poverty.  But he does have the smarts, the toughness, the wisdom, and the vision to begin to change the focus of the racists (both white and non white)toward the real threats to "their pursuit of happiness."  I vote for a "poverty tour".  Perhaps this is what they are already thinking and this is why Edwards has reoccupied his campaign office in NC.  the talk is that he and Oboma are planning something around Edwards poverty project.

What's happening now is more like "racial resentment" rather than "racial hatred".

That may not make it feel a whole lot better in the acute moment it's encountered, but it more accurately identifies the problem, and that makes it easier to overcome.

Hillary supporters, think about Obama's campaign theme: CHANGE
      It's not just for Republicans!

    •  I suspect the best strategy for (0+ / 0-)

that part of the country is to give it a low priority. While I believe in the 50 State Strategy (it works), no campaign has unlimited resources, they should put the money where the votes are.

After the elections, fixing poverty should have a high priority. . . New Deal 2.0 would raise the blood pressures of a lot of Goopers. . . and in the long run, might get some of these voters back.

But this shouldn't be done for political reasons, it should be done because it's the right thing to do.
