have determined Donaldsonville is the natural spot for diversion--enough silt to make the difference for lower Lafourche and Terrebone, enough water flow to keep the ship channel at New Orleans economically viable.

Saying, "The surge is working" . . . is working my last nerve.

    •  Yeah, it's the right spot (4+ / 0-)

Bayou Lafourche used to be the river's primary outlet a couple of thousand years ago. The interesting thing will be to how to pull it off.  The river's about a half mile wide at that point and the bayou's been blocked off from the river ever since the levee went in. Putting that a third of the river's flow through a channel that has essentially been a oversize drainage ditch for fifty years or more will take some doing.

Put if they pull it off then the area from that point downward starts to get replenished - well worth the effort.
