  •  Thank-you for the rating. (2.30)
I need all the help I can get. You are far too generous.
    •  What?! (none)
I haven't rated you on this thread. I have never rated you.

      Get your facts straight.

      •  Who's the 2.5 / 2 for? (1.25)
And you gave me a 4.00/4 up above. I don't pay any attention to the rating numbers and don't have a clue how they work. Were you giving those for the original post? Please talk dirty to me some more. You know how hinky it makes me.
        •  I dunno (none)
Your sock monkey, maybe? Near as I can tell, "JollyBuddah" doesn't have such a rating. In addition, I've only given out 4s on this thread. So maybe you should figure out how to check your ratings instead of hurling accusations.
          •  Excuse my scrivners error (1.57)
your post "Use Your Pie-Hole" has a 2.00/3

And I notice I gave Jeff a none/1 under Thank-you Dr. Pangloss and I've never used the rating gizmo.

            •  Man (none)
You gotta click on the ratings to see who gave what rating.  Then you can start flinging shit, but not before.  And don't be surprised to get zeroes when you fling the shit around here.  Name-calling is most definitely not appreciated.
            •  Wow! (4.00)
              Dude!  Hint for the future:
Don't make accusations based on a system you admit you have no freaking idea how works, lest you end up looking really, really foolish.
              •  Ignorance is my natural state (1.66)
I seek enlightenment. I've clicked on my ratings and the mystery continues. The reason I haven't paid any attention to the whole rating thing is that it seems somewhat juvenile.

Why am I supposed to care?

                •  Kid, you're a joke... (4.00)
First complain that you are being rated badly, then tell us all you don't care.

                  Please.

                  •  The enlightenment just keeps on coming (3.33)
We obviously have a failure to communicate. I could care less about the ratings. I'm still trying to figure out why I should care if somebody who disagrees with me also gives me a low rating. Is that even meaner than calling me really bad names? I don't get it.
                    •  Why are you doing this (4.00)
First of all, it's "couldn't care less" not "could care less". That one always bugs me.

Secondly, what the heck is your goal with all of this bitching? I mean, ok, you have established that you march to a different drummer, are against rallying around the flag, etc. Does that mean that you have an alternative?

I support the idea of focusing on winning. I agree with the observations that JeffLeiber is making. We need to stay "on message" and we need to adopt a clear strategy to help us win. 2nd guessing and whining are a luxury we can't afford right now.

Do you really question any of that? Or are you really just trolling? You sure are acting like a troll as far as I can tell.

                      •  Who's the troll? (1.57)
Who's on first? Am I bitching about whining or whining about bitching? Does a troll rating from a troll translate into a positive rating? Like the theory of negative integers? Yeah baby! Gimme some more love.

The only reason I'm still here is to figure out this juvenile rating system so I can go back to ignoring it.

                    •  What rating?! (none)
As I pointed out to you ten posts ago, the rating you referred to didn't exist!

And you're a fine one to say you don't care about ratings when you brought them up in the first place!

                      •  I'm just trying to figure the damn things out (2.20)
I'm checking these things out for the first time. Why do so many of the posts show none/1 when you gave them a four?
                        •  short and sweet (none)
in case you really want to know:

It takes two to make a rating go right. That means that a comment that is rated by only one person doesn't count for or against their mojo. At least 2 people have to rate a comment before the ratings take effect. 'none/1' means one person has rated the comment, and the comment still has a rating of 'none' because of that.

The rating shown is the average rating for the comment, followed by the number of people who have rated. So 4.00/4 means 4 people have rated the comment '4'. 3.50/2 means one person has rated it '4' and one person rated it '3', and so on.

In order to see who has rated a comment, you have to click on the rating. So when you see a link on a comment that says '2.50/2', click on it. Then you will see a list, like:

                          Random User   4
                          AnotherRandom 3
                          DriveBy       1

                          etc.

                  •  And what's up with the people who rate (2.25)
but don't comment? As I said this whole rating thing seems quite bizarre. I'm not any more impressed with the rating thing than I am with the profanity.

Maybe if somebody could explain it I could go away happy.

                    •  Some people... (4.00)
feel their rating speaks for itself.

Me, I can never talk enough, so I rate and I comment.

Unless I am so disgusted by someone that I can't trust myself to respond to their crap.

I came pretty close to not commenting on yours. But then I saw this purty red flag just a-sittin' there and thought, well, now, I guess I'll just have to say something, however mild and innocuous. (Comparatively speaking, of course.)

                      •  So far so good (none)
Now why should I care if somebody who is on a profane rant and disagrees with me gives me a troll rating? Maybe I'm not sensitve enough, but I really don't see the point.
                        •  I'm confused (none)
You're the one that brought up ratings.

                          •  This is my last question, really (none)
Why should I care if somebody who disagrees with me gives me a troll rating? Is it like really really mean? Is it even worse than calling me really really bad names?

No kidding. Why should I care?

                          •  These are my first and last answers. Really! (4.00)
Only you can decide whether or not you care about something, but I can share with you a secret about what impacts the ratings might have.

In the short term, if the average rating of your post is less than 1, then casual vistors will not be able to see it.  If you do not care whether or not someone reads your posts, may I politely suggest that you open up a text editor window and flail away (if you do not care, that is -- your choice).

In the long term, if you get many troll ratings it will prevent you from attaining the status of "Trusted User" here, which can only be achieved by posting enough times with reasonably positive feedback to exceed some mysterious threshold.  You may not care about this, either, but this is what allows one to give zero ratings (which allows you to render posts perceived as trollish invisible to the casual viewer -- provided other Trusted Users concur).

All of this infromation (and more) is readily available at the click of a mouse on the "FAQ" label in the menu box you should be able to find in the upper right hand corner of this page.
If you would like to join in our conversation, I humbly suggest you pay it a visit.

And now I will answer a question you did not ask.  Why did I care enough to politely respond to what appears more likely to be a provocative challenge than a sincere question?  I guess I have an old-fashioned idea that one should always strive to give another the benefit of the doubt in situations like this -- and because I care about the level of discourse in this place. So I have given you the benefit of assuming your questions were sincere.  If I am wrong this rating system will tend to minimize the number of readers who are distrated by your comments.  If I am right, perhaps you will hang around long enough to benefit us with your perspective.  The choice, of course, is up to you.

                          •  Thank-you (none)
That's what I've been trying to figure out. FAQ, of course.
                          •  It seems arbitrary, (none)
but that's life. I got two zeros for my post "I'm still trying to figure these damn things out" and I can't figure that out either. If asking a genuine question is trolling, you can put me on permanent troll status. I checked the FAQ when I first got here, but the trusted user thing didn't register, I just picked up the basics and moved on.
                    •  That's an offer I can't refuse (4.00)
The first number in the parentheses is the average rating your post has received from other people.  The second number is the number of ratings that go into making that average.  It requires two ratings to calculate an average, so the first number will be "none" until the second number reaches 2 or more.  If you click on the numbers, you'll get a list of people who have rated the post, and what rating they gave.  To rate posts yourself, click on the ratings menu under the post you want to rate.  Then click the button next to it.

                      OK bye!
