  •  Because he's a political coward (10+ / 0-)

He opposes the bill, but doesn't want to be on record as voting against it because that would be politically damaging in the fall.

He's pissed at Obama now because Obama called him out on the floor. Obama forced McCain to very publicly defend his opposition to the bill, the very thing McCain tried to avoid doing by skipping the vote.

From a political standpoint, McCain's best move would be to show up in the Senate, say that while it's not his preferred bill, he's happy to support some kind of benefit for the troops, and vote Yea. It's pandering, but it doesn't change the outcome of the vote and it takes the issue off the table for the fall.

Why did he not just pander instead of avoid something that he should be absolutely on the record of supporting?

      I don't get it.

I guess I just don't get "stupid".  WTF?

      Need something new here...

He's trailing both Clinton and Obama in campaign dollars, and the only reliable money pool for him is the big-money fiscal conservatives.

They don't want the bill because it will cost money. Ergo, as long as he's got his begging bowl out he has to be a budget hawk.
