Not all the Scots and Scotch-Irish moved to the hills.

The early arrivals, (many of my ancestors) settled in the coastal plains and Piedmont regions of NC, SC, and VA.

Many were on the wrong side of the revolution and yet did not flee like their English cousins to Canada.

The were the slaveholders and both planters and small farmers. They also made up the core of the confederate army a few generations later.

They even helped alienate the later waves of immigrants and forced them west into the less hospitable mountain regions.

My father's mother was born on what had been a plantation in Scotland Neck, NC...Halifax County... her grandmother and generations preceding going back to the 1730's were slaves on said plantation.

Not long ago I found that the people who owned my people and from whom I get my surname had a website:

      http://www.thehouseofjossey-josey.org/...

Being AA, it's pretty much a given that if one goes back far enough he will find his family were slaves... but to be able to put a face on that is a bit of a freakout.

This family has prospered greatly... due in large part to my direct ancestors... but I'm not mad at them... while neither my father nor my paternal grandparents finished high school, among me and my siblings 5 of the 7 of us have college degrees; 2 have graduate degrees with 2 more pending ( my younger brother and I are both going for M. Divs ) my older brother is a career Naval officer; my older sister is an HR Director; I am a Systems Architect, etc...

In spite of the hurdles we've had to face, we've worked hard and we've been blessed beyond measure... but even in my family, the things that ail the AA community at large are manifest in my cousins, aunts, uncles etc... incarceration, addiction, being caught in the cycle of poverty etc.

So there's still work to do...

sorry if I went a ways off the beaten path...

one of the most widely used AA surnames.
I am from Cumberland county, one of the centers of early Scotch-Irish settlement.
